Information Design and Standards Development

Here you will be able to access a range of information about NHS Wales Information Standards and their use in collecting, reporting and describing the activity of NHS Wales hospitals and other healthcare organisations.

The Information Design and Standards Development function forms part of the Digital Strategy Directorate of the Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW). The department is comprised of four individual teams covering a range of linked functions:

The Data Standards team, who support the assurance and development of all NHS Wales data standards and maintain the NHS Wales Data Dictionary.

The Clinical Classifications team develop policy and clinical classifications standards and guidance for clinical coding services in NHS Wales.  The team maintain and organise the national clinical coding training schedule and provide a national clinical coding helpdesk function on behalf of NHS Wales. The team also maintain the NHS Wales Clinical Classifications Standards Dictionary and deliver the annual National Clinical Coding Audit Programme.

Between them, the Data Standards and Clinical Classification teams provide advice and assurance to national application teams in support of the delivery of consistent, standardised data and information for operational systems, such as WCCIS, WLIMS, WEDS etc. This includes the definition of relevant SNOMED CT content for those systems.

The Data Quality team are responsible for the implementation of data quality standards to support data quality performance monitoring of secondary use data sets and proactively seek to raise awareness of the importance of data quality, with a view to improving the overall standard of data quality in NHS Wales.

The Welsh Reference Data and Terminology Service, maintains and develops both the Welsh Reference Data Service (WRDS) and NHS Wales Terminology Server, which are used to ensure the use of consistent reference data and terminologies across NHS Wales IT systems and reports. The team host the infrastructure that provides a central repository for both UK and Welsh specific national code systems and value sets.
